A Ukrainian woman lost 400,000 hryvnias to a “gift” from a fake military

“Military” promised the woman that they would send her a “suitcase containing $250,000” with which to buy a house.

A 49-year-old Burshtyn resident became a victim of a fraud after spending almost 400,000 hryvnias on a property that did not exist. She was promised to be sent by a scammer with whom she corresponded through a dating site.
According to police officers from the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Ivano-Frankivsk Region, the woman corresponded for two months with a man who introduced himself as “Military William Shawn” and allegedly planned to come to Ukraine.

The woman then received a message from a “logistics company” demanding payment to transport the package. Trusting the fraudsters, she transferred several payments totaling about 400,000 hryvnia. However, the woman did not receive a single package and the “military” stopped contacting her.

Currently, the investigators of the territorial unit have entered information into the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations under part. 2 art. 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
