Cold-blooded unparalleled: Fraudsters target mourners during “love scamming”.

It doesn't get any colder or more ruthless. The operator of several cemeteries in Rhineland-Palatinate warns against fraudsters who target grieving people on their Facebook pages. The German Cemetery Society, operator of 14 cemeteries in Germany, said that mourners are often in a vulnerable phase of life and have now become a target group for “love scammers”.

“These fraudsters use Facebook to try to gain the trust of their victims in order to ultimately exploit them financially,” said managing director Judith Könsgen. The social media team has noticed more suspicious comments in recent weeks, mostly aimed at older women.

“There is a perfidious strategy behind these seemingly harmless messages: the fraudsters try to build trust through repeated contact attempts,” says Könsgen. Then money is demanded. Suspicious comments would be deleted and profiles reported, said the managing director. Nevertheless, she would like more support and faster reactions from Facebook.
