Current scams: Woman wants to help and loses 65,000 euros to fraudsters
Fraud is everywhere these days. Criminals surprise their victims at the front door, by email, on the phone or smartphone. Anyone who knows the current tricks has a better chance of reacting correctly.
Update from February 21st: A current case from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania draws attention to a bad scam that the police are warning about. A 60-year-old lost 65,000 euros.
A man contacted her via a social network in June 2023 and asked for help with a package. He claimed that he was expecting a package with cash and gold jewelry, but he first had to pay the parcel company for money. The woman from Heringsdorf describes that he forwarded her to an alleged parcel company, which then demanded money from her several times over the course of several months. She repeatedly transferred sums to various accounts at home and abroad before finally reporting the fraud this week.
On this occasion, the police once again appeal to never trust strangers - be it at the front door, on the phone or on the Internet - and above all not to transfer money. When strangers ask for financial help, alarm bells should ring. More older people tend to be affected by fraud. Everyone is therefore called upon to warn those around them of such dangers.
