Malaysian Immigration officers suspended after two Nigerians escape deportation

Two Malaysian Immigration officers have been suspended after two Nigerians who were being escorted to the airport for deportation escaped from their custody early Thursday morning.

The Star newspaper reported that the Nigerians, Solomon Udo Eneh and Osuji Chinedu, were being deported for misusing their student visas.

About seven unidentified men forcefully freed the two Nigerians when the van conveying them to the airport stopped at a fuel station near the airport, one of the immigration officers claimed.

The Malaysian Immigration Service has put the two officers under immediate suspension pending investigations.

The two Immigration officers had taken the Nigerians to the airport together with a Palestinian, who was also to be deported, said Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Immigration Depot director, Datuk Mohmed Asri Yusof said.

He said since the Nigerians’ flight was scheduled for 2. 55am, one of the officers escorted the Palestinian, whose flight was at 12.15am into the

airport to check in, while the other officer was asked to guard the Nigerians.

But when the officer who escorted the Palestinian returned, he discovered that the second officer had driven the van away – with the Nigerians inside- to a petrol station near KLIA to buy some drinks.

“Fifteen minutes later, the second officer contacted his colleague, who was still at the airport, to say he had been stopped by seven African men who had used force to free the two Nigerians before handcuffing him to the steering wheel,” Yusof told a press conference.

The second officer and his colleague reported the case to the police at 1.30am and 3.30am respectively.
