Report an internet crime

Post by Pete »

For the US residents:

I assume the crime must have a 'US' element, or the US authorities won't touch it.

Since we're dealing with scammers, you need to know where the scammers are, so if 'Mary Chrissy Jenny' who is working as a model in Nigeria, but claims to be from Ohio in the US of A' scams you......it won't work.
Ask us where we think the scammer is from...

Basic rule of thumb, 'the scammer is where the money is picked up'.
Not always accurate. works 95% of the time.
Sometimes, Nigerians will have a victim or accomplice pick up money in another country.

If you've sent money to 'that country', you need to start with the appropriate Law Enforcement Agency.

Here's a the online form for the US.
http://www.ic3.gov/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Never send money to somebody you only know from the internet, or phone calls!

Don't expect a reply, don't expect your scammer to get caught, don't expect to recover your money.
But file a report ANYWAY if you were scammed, this brings attention to the problem.

Nigerians scamming out of Malaysia you can report to rmp@rmp.gov.my
Their website: http://www.rmp.gov.my/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (in Malay)
However, you MUST live in Malaysia in order to file with them. If you don't, you cannot.

for UK:
http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

for Australia:
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/video.aspx?v ... 37bcc811d2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.police.qld.gov.au/programs/c ... orting.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They suggest to make reports directly to EFCC Nigeria:

http://www.efccnigeria.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
info@efccnigeria.org

or Ghana Police:

http://www.ghanapolice.info" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
info@ghanapolice.info

However, beware that there is a lot of recovery scams going on, impersonating EFCC Nigeria and Ghana Police. Any legitimate correspondence from above 2 agencies MUST end with @efccnigeria.org or @ghanapolice.info. If there is any other email extention (especially Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc..) this is just another 100% scam.

If you receive an email from EFCC or Ghana Police, don't forget to check not only "From" line, but "Reply to" line in email headers as well, as that's where your reply will be actually delivered to. Make sure it is indeed @efccnigeria.org or @ghanapolice.info

Besides, they will NEVER contact you first. You have to make a report with them first, in order to expect any kind of reply from them.

But... we don't know of anybody who EVER got a reply from the REAL EFCC Nigeria.
